Helen’s go-getter attitude was instrumental in her quick rise from being one of Smith’s top traders to her current role of Senior Sales Manager. For Helen, it’s all about the challenge at hand and never giving up.

What brought you to Smith?

I worked for a Japanese company before I joined Smith, and I was looking for some new challenges – which I definitely got! I had to build my business from zero, which means I made 50-100 cold calls every day to find new customers.

What is your personal philosophy about your job?

As the Senior Sales Manager, my philosophy is: Never give up. Problems come up, and I work very hard to solve them. Most recently, I was working extensively with a vendor, visiting them in person and speaking to them on the phone several times to ensure we were able to meet our customer’s deadline. It’s very rewarding when all the parts come together.

What has surprised you most about working with electronic components?

The electronics market moves very quickly, and, to be successful, I have to keep up with the shifts in component price and availability. Working in the electronics industry can be very challenging, but my job is also very rewarding because I am always thinking quickly and on my feet.

What do you look forward to every day at work?

I look forward to talking with people in order to make a new deal. There are new chances every day.
When I make a deal, it’s very fulfilling – especially if it was tough to close and I really helped the customers out.

What is the coolest thing about living in Hong Kong?

It’s so convenient to live in Hong Kong. It’s the best of both worlds: you can enjoy city life while also being able to enjoy the nature, too. I go hiking almost every week.
