Food is one of the most basic human needs, yet many Houstonians live in hunger every day. According to feedingamerica.org, 16.6% of Harris County residents are food insecure, not knowing where their next meal will come from.
Smith’s Houston-based offices recently took part in a donation drive to help fill the gap in the food supply – with a friendly competition thrown in to keep things interesting.
The contest to see which of 23 teams could bring in the highest number of nonperishable food items spanned 15 days, during which the 125 participants brought in a total of 12,765 donations. These donations amounted to a truckload of food.
The winning team, called Jean-Claude CAN Damme, collected 4,179 items – roughly 30% of the total amount of food donated.
“Nothing breeds success like competition,” said Ray Redding, Business Development Manager and member of the winning team. “Add that to our primary goal of supporting a charitable cause, and this is the result: the latest example of Smith going all out for our community.”
“These nonperishable food items will feed a lot of hungry families during the holiday season, and we feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to help,” Ray added.
The food was donated to the food pantry run by Houston’s First Baptist Church.
