Smith Hong Kong Participates in Charity Bread Run

“Food. Wanted, not wasted.”

That’s the philosophy driving Feeding Hong Kong, the organization behind the annual Bread Run, an initiative that gathers leftover bread from bakeries around Hong Kong and distributes it to people in need.

Smith partnered with Feeding Hong Kong during the September 28, 2017 event, which saw a total of 1,287 pieces of bread collected from 76 stores around Hong Kong. The bread was delivered to 7 charities, shelters, and schools.

“We learned that 3,400 tons of food are wasted each day in our city, while one million people live in poverty, struggling to afford nutritious meals,” said Grace Gong, HR specialist of our Hong Kong office. “Our small act of collecting surplus bread from bakeries helps to reduce waste and help these people in need. It’s very meaningful; that’s why we, along with our families and friends, are all happy to participate in this.”

The purpose of the Bread Run is to fight hunger and reduce the amount of quality food going to landfills in Hong Kong. Through this event and Feeding Hong Kong’s other year-round efforts, the organization also aims to raise awareness about food waste, hunger, and food banks. Given the Bread Run’s popularity and the number of mouths it has helped to feed, Feeding Hong Kong appears to be achieving that goal – and Smith was proud to be a part of it.

Our Hong Kong team’s participation in the Bread Run serves as another example of how Smith’s people come together for the betterment of those in need. When we work together, we can achieve great things!
