As the DJ played music overhead in the auditorium of Evan E. Worthing High School, located on the south side of Houston, hundreds of children lined up to get ready for the upcoming school year.

For the third year in a row, Smith proudly partnered with the Boykins Youth Foundations’s annual Back to School Uniform and Haircut Drive. Smith employees donated 180 uniforms this year, doubling our contribution from last year.

“We would like to give a special thanks to Smith for being a major sponsor for three years,” said Chris Boykins, founder of Boykins Youth Foundations. “Smith aided in serving 601 children this year by suiting 180 boys and girls for the start of a new school year.”

“Year after year, Boykins Youth Foundations expands its reach and is able to help more students in the Houston area,” said Andrea Meyer, Smith’s Internal Communications Coordinator. “I think Smith employees really respond to all the good work Chris does and are eager to help local kids in need.”

Many schools in the Houston area require uniforms for a variety of reasons – fostering a positive learning environment, reducing bullying, and making it easier to get dressed in the morning, to name a few. But, like school supplies, uniforms can be one more expense that local families have a hard time working into their budget.

“It is important for me and other organizers to give back to the community that contributed to who we have become today,” Chris said. “We believe it is our duty to lead by example by serving in our community – starting with underprivileged children. Again, we thank Smith for joining us in executing our vision.”

In addition to free uniforms, students were also given haircuts courtesy of AJ’s Barber and Beauty Salon so that they could ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Glory Fitness, MADLINEMAN Foundation, Rock in Hood Foundation, former Texans guard Fred Weary, and New York Knicks guard Damyean Dotson were also at the event.
