Houston-Based Company Marks 20th Anniversary in 2004
With Record Sales of more than $500 Million
Houston, Texas - Smith & Associates retained the world #1 rank among Independent Distributors of Electronic Components with 2004 sales of US $513 million. Smith’s 60 percent year-over-year sales increase was more than double the industry average. In addition to being recognized by Purchasing magazine and other trade publications as the top independent distributor, Smith also claimed the #7 spot on Electronic Business magazine’s listing of the Top 25 North American Electronic Component Distributors, the only independent distributor to rank in the top ten.

The record revenue number capped a momentous year at Smith. In March 2004, Smith expanded its presence in Asia with a new sales and purchasing office in Shanghai, China. The office was the company’s third in the region and was an immediate success due to long standing relationships with key OEMs and EMS providers in China and throughout Asia.
In June 2004, Smith announced the appointment of Doug Kelly as president and chief executive officer. Kelly, who joined as CFO in 1995, leads the company with Robert and Leland Ackerley, co-founders and owners.
