Smith Opens New, Premier Service, Logistics & Testing Hub


Last week while an international team from Smith & Associates was attending Electronica 2014, another major event was happening at our global headquarters in Houston, Texas: the grand opening of our new, 57,199 square foot warehouse, in-house testing laboratories and over 7,000 sq. ft. of expanded Smith Operations offices.

Certified Quality

Smith's new, flagship Operations hub extends the services that Smith can provide to more customers and with even greater attention to unique customer requirements. The Houston hub extends Smith's capabilities across logistics, testing, quality processes, anti-counterfeiting, hubbing, inventory management, and reselling, among many other capabilities. Just as our previous warehouse and testing facility, the new global hub holds ISO 17025, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, AS 9120, CCAP-101, ESD accreditations and certifications, respectively. Not only does the new hub house the latest in semiconductor and electronic component testing equipment to support full services done in-house, it is also home to over 30 of Smith's electronic component inspectors who are certified to Level 1 CCCI-102.

Functional testing, anti-counterfeit and substandard part identification as well as the ability to support additional customer requirements that go beyond standard requirements are services that Smith provides and now can extend to meet the growing demand from more customers.

Rise of outsourcing services

Throughout the past many quarters, and reinforced last week at Electronica, electronics manufacturers and OEMs are increasingly in need of flexible services along the supply chain from the point of new product introductions through after-market service support. With growth in new markets and diversifying applications for their devices and components, manufacturers and OEMs are rapidly expanding globally to realize opportunities from first mover advantages and to increase market share by ramping up their presence in highly competitive markets. These strategies present the opportunity to diversify market positions as well as to increase sales but these opportunities come with significant challenges.

Outsourcing services to leading distributors like Smith, gives manufacturers and OEMs the ability to support inventory management, logistics, hubbing, and procurement (and possibly various repackaging requirements) with distribution to dispersed facilities while attending to the highest level of security and quality. Smith offers its customers not only the best-in-class, in-house testing, procurement, and operations in the industry, but along with that the needed flexibility to attend to even the most rapidly changing market situations – all with the certitude that quality is never compromised.
