Market Update: Western Digital to acquire Hitachi Global Storage Technologies

PrintE-mail

Today's news that Western Digital is to acquire Hitachi Global Storage Technologies will obviously have an impact on the battle for market share between Seagate and WD. But it could also be the harbinger of future acquisition activity in the HDD market. The HDD units of companies like Samsung and Toshiba are potential targets for acquisitions, just like Hitachi. Additionally, these companies have made some movements that could be interpreted as shifts away from their component business and toward their full unit business. Plus, as manufacturers of notebooks, they may be freeing themselves to pursue a product line that will use SSD exclusively in the near future.
