Full IssueGoogle aims to Transform Mobile Technology

Months of “gPhone” anticipation and speculation ended last week with a major announcement from Google, but don’t put the gPhone on your Christmas list just yet. Instead of launching a new device, Google introduced Android, a Linux-based open development software platform for mobile devices; and at the same time announced the formation of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a group of technology companies that will develop hardware and software for Android-based devices.
Google chairman and chief executive Eric Schmidt said in a November 5 statement, “A fresh approach to fostering innovation in the mobile industry will help shape a new computing environment that will change the way people access and share information in the future. Today's announcement is more ambitious than any single 'Google Phone' that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks. Our vision is that the powerful platform we're unveiling will power thousands of different phone models.”
One week later on November 12, Google released the first version of the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and announced the Android Developer Challenge, offering $10 million worth of awards for developers who build the best Android applications.
